I painted this in during the 2019 Mendocino Open Paint Out. Up until this point, the largest plein air I had ever done was 12"x16" (my usual size is 9"x12"). But I was among some of the strongest competition I have faced, and I wanted to see what I was capable of. The larger size required two three-hour morning sessions, and I had to haul out my full-size easel to accomodate the canvas size. But the extra effort was worth it because not only did I receive the "Best Water Scene" award for this piece, but the painting sold almost immediately as well. The ironic thing is that before painting in Mendocino, I felt that water was one of my weak points. But I began to develop a better understanding of water by being around it and painting it for 5 straight days I painted this in during the 2019 Mendocino Open Paint Out.
